Electrical safety and personal insulation are paramount in high-voltage environments across the United Arab Emirates. Within primary transformer yards, power transmission facilities, and distribution substations operated under DEWA, SEWA, ADDC, and industrial operators in KIZAD and JAFZA, maintenance personnel work in close proximity to energized switchgear, busbars, and high-voltage capacitor banks. In these mission-critical facilities, metallic walkways and steel access platforms present severe hazards: electrical conductivity, induced electromagnetic eddy currents, and touch-potential electrocution risks. To maintain uncompromising safety standards, civil contractors rely on non-conductive GRP access platforms.
Manufactured by EFG Composites F.Z.E at our engineering plant in Ajman Free Zone, composite access structures are built from pultruded structural profiles, molded dielectric grating panels, and ergonomic safety handrail systems that are inherently electrically non-conductive and non-magnetic.
Electrical Safety: Dielectric Strength & Arc Flash Protection
Unlike steel or aluminium structures that readily conduct electrical charge, glass reinforced polymer (GRP) materials are superior electrical insulators. When high-voltage anomalies or ground faults occur, GRP access structures provide an isolated working surface that prevents step-and-touch potential electrical transfers to operating technicians.
| Electrical & Physical Parameter | EFG Composites Platform Profile | Standard Metallic Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Dielectric Strength | 35 to 45 kV/inch (ASTM D149) | 0 kV (Zero Insulation / Fully Conductive) |
| Arc Resistance | 120+ Seconds (ASTM D495) | Non-existent (Immediate vaporizing arc) |
| Magnetic Permeability | Non-magnetic (Zero EMI / RFI interference) | Ferromagnetic (High eddy current heat risk) |
| Electrical Grounding Requirement | None required; eliminates copper bonding | Mandatory continuous copper grounding earthing |
| Flame Spread Classification | ASTM E84 Class 1 / Self-extinguishing | Non-combustible (structural distortion under heat) |
Eliminating Induced Eddy Currents Near Transformers
Large power transformers and high-amperage bus ducts generate intense electromagnetic fields. When metallic steel stairs, handrails, or cable bridge walkways are positioned within these fields, induced electrical currents (eddy currents) flow through the metal framework. These unwanted currents produce localized overheating, energy losses, and tingling contact shocks for maintenance crews. GRP structural shapes contain zero ferromagnetic materials, making them completely transparent to magnetic fields and immune to induction heating.
For combined vertical ladder access and resting mezzanines, review our engineered GRP platforms and access ladder assemblies built to BS EN ISO 14122 specifications.
Rapid Modular Assembly Without Hot-Work Permits
Working in live electrical substations or fuel-storage perimeters requires strict safety compliance. Traditional steel platforms require on-site cutting, welding, and grinding—all requiring high-risk Hot Work Permits that frequently force partial substation shutdowns. GRP structural sections are pre-fabricated in our factory and assembled on-site using mechanical 316 stainless steel or pultruded composite fasteners, requiring only hand tools and cold cutting with zero ignition sparks.
