Here’s something we run into constantly at EFG. A client calls asking why the GRP ladder they bought two years ago is already showing surface degradation, fading, slight fiber exposure on the rungs, or a stringer that flexes more than it used to. And every time, the answer is the same: it wasn’t actually a manufacturing defect in the traditional sense. It was built to a lower spec than what they thought they were paying for.
This happens because GRP as a material category covers an enormous range of quality. “GRP ladder” on a quote can mean a properly engineered, pultruded profile with UV-stabilized resin and bonded joints. It can also mean a hand-laid, resin-light structure assembled quickly to hit a price point. Both get called a GRP ladder. Only one of them survives a UAE summer without visible change.
What we actually check when we manufacture a ladder
We’re not writing this to scare anyone into paying more. We’re writing it because most buyers, understandably, don’t know what questions to ask, and most suppliers won’t volunteer this information unless pushed.
Resin-to-glass ratio. This is the single biggest lifespan factor and the hardest one to see with the naked eye. A properly built pultruded GRP profile has a specific, controlled ratio of resin to glass fiber. Too much resin and not enough fiber, and the ladder loses structural strength over time even if it looks fine on day one. Too little resin, and the fibers aren’t fully encapsulated, which means moisture can eventually work its way in and cause internal degradation you won’t see until it’s already advanced.
UV stabilization in the resin, not just a surface coating. A lot of the market applies a UV-resistant gel coat on the outside and calls it done. That coating wears. What actually protects a ladder over 10, 15, 20 years in direct UAE sun is UV stabilizer mixed into the resin itself, so the protection doesn’t disappear when the surface layer wears thin. This is a genuinely invisible difference at the point of sale, and it’s one of the most common corners cut.
How the rungs are joined to the stringers. Mechanically fastened rungs (bolted or riveted through the stringer) create a stress point and a potential moisture entry point at every single rung. Properly bonded or through-molded rung construction avoids this. Run your hand along a rung joint on any ladder you’re evaluating. If you can feel a mechanical fastener rather than a smooth bonded transition, ask directly what the joint method is.
Pultrusion versus hand lay-up. Pultruded profiles are pulled through a die under controlled heat and pressure, producing consistent wall thickness and fiber orientation along the entire length. Hand lay-up is exactly what it sounds like, built by hand, which introduces variability from one unit to the next, and often from one end of the same ladder to the other. For a load-bearing access structure, that consistency isn’t a nice-to-have.
Why this gets missed so often
Most GRP ladders in the UAE market aren’t sold by the people who made them. They’re sold by traders who import from whichever factory quoted the lowest price that month, sometimes a different factory each order. The trader isn’t lying when they call it a GRP ladder, they usually just don’t know the manufacturing details themselves, and they have no reason to ask, since their margin doesn’t depend on the ladder lasting fifteen years instead of five.

A supplier who manufactures their own product should be able to answer all five without hesitation. A trader reselling someone else’s output often can’t, not because they’re being evasive, but because they genuinely don’t have the answer.
